ok i'm not mad... not mad... it's all good... deep breaths.

today at the dental clinic i tore this friggin place up... i'm pretty sure most of the employees here are used to lazzzzzzy mornings and so-so afternoons. 'you have a tooth-ache? take this antibiotic and then come see us next week for a 3 hour appointment.' NOT ME!

'you're here for a 30 minute appointment? your tooth is on fire? you want that shit pulled out? hellllllllllllls yeah let's DO this mothah fuckah!' high-five the patient.....

the assistants and staff don't know how to handle me at this place.... i've kicked up the productivity here like you wouldn't believe. here's what i did this morning:

patient 1: couple of fillings
patient 2: extracted his remaining four lower teeth, inserted an interim denture
patient 3: surgically extracted a tooth (ie peeled his gum-tissue away from his tooth, flapping it away from the tooth-socket bone... then drilling away the bone for access to the remaining tooth structure, then pulling that sucker out of there... then i put in some gel-foam and sutured that guy up.... beautiful)....
patient 4: bridge prep
patient 5: impressions for a night-guard
patient 6: evaluation of future root canal tooth

boo-yeah.

afternoon wasn't as crazy but my assistant? COMPLETELY WASTED/DESTROYED/WIPED-OUT! you know what though? toughhhhhhhhhhhhhh shit! that's what this job entails! i DO NOT make the schedule... you have a problem with the schedule, talk to the receptionist.... you think i'm not completely wiped-out as well? in fact, since i'm the one actually pulling/cranking on these teeth, and drilling them annnnnnnd thinking about the best way to handle the situation.... i'm probably 10x as wiped-out! the WORST part is the OTHER lazy-ass staff members are offering their condolences to my assistant about howwwwww hard today was.... boooooooooooooooo hoo! touuuuuuuuuugh toodles folks! don't like it? don't schedule all these friggin patients crammed in there like lemmings.

okay one awesome patient this afternoon.... guy totally swollen in the lower jaw from an infected unrestorable molar tooth.... i numbed that guy up to timbuktu and then proceeded to drain a water-bottle full of pus out of his swollen cheek (inside his mouth on the cheek side right next to the tooth).... then i pulled that tooth outta there... ohhhh yes. satisfying.

ah well, that's it for me for now,

And I have a great smile still for my old age. And would like to keep it that way... How do you handle the peeps with nasty teeth? Ugh, I would vomit on them. Blah... And the smokers, you earn your money dear. Keep it up!

by all_mixed_up, 01-20-12 11:36 AM I absolutely love the dentist. She told me my old filling was leaking and that I had a deep cavity even though the tooth didn't give me too much trouble. Since the tooth has been re-filled it hurts, it hurts bad! I went back and she filed it down because she said it was too high. The damn thing still hurts and is soooooo sensitive :/. Sounds like you are a much better dentist :).

by xander-man, 01-20-12 11:52 AM you know what though? that deffffffinitely happens and it's DEFINITELY annoying for you the patient (and for the dentist because a sensitive tooth is impossible to predict!). here are a couple things to consider... if the old filling was an old silver filling, and now the new filling is a tooth-colored filling, the tooth needs time (at LEAST a couple of weeks) to get used to having the new type of filling (kind of like switching from sneakers to high-heels or snow-boots)... also, there's a good chance that the decay affecting the tooth could have run pretty deep underneath/around the old filling... if the decay came close to the nerve in the tooth, this can be very irritating to the tooth. but here's the thing... decay is no good right? you need to have the decay removed, but sometimes this can be irritating to the tooth for a while. most sensitivity goes away after a couple of weeks (a couple more in your case if it needed a second visit to polish-down), but sometimes it can last a couple of months believe it or not! UNFORTUNATELY there's no much that can be done except giving it time! if your symptoms WORSEN where the pain wakes you up in the middle of the night (we're talking SEVERE pain, not just pain if you drink some ice-water or something), then the tooth may require a root canal treatment (as the germs have gone right INTO the nerve/pulp of the tooth)... a root canal treatment is no big deal (except if your insurance doesn't cover it... then it can definitely be expensive)... but if in the future you need a root canal, don't be worried about it... it's similar to getting a filling done, except it usually takes a little more time. ah well... good luck! use sensodyne toothpaste in the meantime!
